Privacy Policy
Parallel Translate (the "extension") respects and protects your privacy. This policy explains what data the extension processes, how, and the choices you have. In one sentence: we do not collect your personally identifiable information and we do not build user profiles.
1. What we do NOT collect
The extension requires no registration or login. We do not collect your name, email, or account, we do not build user profiles, and we do not track or upload your browsing history. There is no analytics backend collecting user data.
2. How data is processed
To provide translation and lookup, the extension processes the following data only when you actively trigger it:
- Page / selected text: when you enable translation or look up a selection, the relevant text fragment is sent to the translation or dictionary service you have chosen, to return a result.
- Local settings & cache: your preferences, vocabulary list, and translation cache are stored only in your browser (chrome.storage and IndexedDB) and are never uploaded to our servers.
- API keys: if you configure your own AI model key, it is stored locally and used only to call that service directly.
3. Third-party services
When you use the relevant feature, text is sent to one of the following services to return a result. Please refer to their respective privacy policies:
- Translation engines: Google Translate, Microsoft Translator, or an AI model you configure (e.g. OpenAI, Anthropic, DeepSeek).
- Dictionary proxy: a self-hosted Cloudflare Worker that returns definitions and examples; it receives only the word being looked up and does not record information that identifies you.
- Speech: Edge TTS or your browser's built-in speech service.
4. Permissions
The browser permissions the extension requests, and why:
- host_permissions (all sites): to render parallel text and vocabulary highlights on the pages you read — required for the core feature.
- storage: to keep your settings, vocabulary list, and cache locally.
- offscreen: to play pronunciation audio in the background.
5. Retention & deletion
All data lives locally. You can clear the cache and vocabulary list anytime in the extension settings, or simply uninstall the extension to remove all local data completely.
6. Children's privacy
The extension targets learners with a language foundation, is not directed at children under 13, and does not knowingly collect personal information from children.
7. Policy updates
If this policy changes, we will update the "Last updated" date at the top of this page. Material changes will be noted in the extension or on this site.
8. Contact
For questions about this privacy policy, contact [email protected]. For product feedback, email [email protected].
9. Feedback form
When you actively submit content through the feedback form on this site, we store: the message text and optional email you provide; de-identified request metadata used for anti-spam (IP truncated to the subnet level, User-Agent reduced to browser + major version); the page URL and UI language at submission time. This data is used only to read and respond to your feedback and to prevent abuse, never to build user profiles or shared with third parties. We plan to purge old feedback records after 12 months.
